Avowed: everything we know so far

Obsidian has been a studio that punches above its weight with amazing RPGs like Pillars of Eternity and South Park: The Stick of Truth, as well as classic games like Fallout: New Vegas and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2. While we’re waiting on the sequel to the sci-fi adventure The Outer Worlds, the team is taking on its biggest challenge yet. Avowed is a first-person RPG that has a lot of visual similarities to Skyrim, but is set within the original world created for Pillars of Eternity that is ramping up to be our most anticipated upcoming Xbox Series X game alongside Fable. We’ve been tracking this game since it was revealed in 2020 and it now has a firm spot on our list of upcoming video games. This could be the next great RPG experience you’ve been looking for, so check out everything you need to know about Avowed.

While Avowed is an Xbox exclusive, you can still find tons of upcoming PS5 games, upcoming PC games, and upcoming Switch games to play on all platforms.

Release date

During the January Xbox Developer Direct, we learned that Avowed was scheduled to be released in the fall of 2024, however, that window was later pushed. Xbox has confirmed that Avowed will now release on February 18, 2025.

With Obsidian being owned by Xbox and a first-party studio, Avowed is an Xbox and PC exclusive. There is some possibility that it could come to other platforms like PlayStation in the future now that Xbox has started experimenting with bringing its exclusives to other platforms, but for now, it is best to assume this title will stay on Xbox and PC.

Trailers

Avowed - Official Gameplay Trailer

The Official Gameplay Trailer was shown off at the Xbox Games Showcase in 2023. We will discuss the actual gameplay in a minute, but this trailer does give us a glimpse into the world of the Living Lands. We see a few characters of different races, unique biomes, and dangerous monsters. It also keys us in on the main story thread of attempting to uncover the mystery of a plague that seems to corrupt its victims’ souls. There’s also the question of whether or not your character will end up being a savior or a villain, which will affect your ability to roleplay and how you want your story to go.

Avowed Story Trailer - Xbox Games Showcase 2024

The Story Trailer clears up some of the details we only got hints about before. This plague we’re tasked with investigating is called the “Dreamscourge,” though what exactly it does is still unclear. As you learn more, different characters will tempt you to abandon your mission and take a different side of the conflict. It will be up to you what path you take and what ending you get as a result.

We also meet Giatta, who will be one of four companions you can adventure with and learn about as you adventure.

For some background, Avowed takes place in the world of Eora from Pillars of Eternity, but does not require knowledge of that game. It is not a full fantasy world like Skyrim, so it features technologies advancing to the level of guns at least, as well as plenty of mythical monsters and magic. The Living Lands is an island mostly isolated from the rest of the world, though your character is said to be sent there by the Aedyr Empire specifically to look into the plague. What role you play in the story, and which side you take on any conflict, will be up to you.

Gameplay

Avowed Deep Dive - Xbox Developer_Direct

As mentioned, one look at Avowed will evoke memories of Skyrim. In some ways that’s an accurate description, but it doesn’t tell the whole story.

You will play from a first-person perspective wielding any combination of one-handed weapons, like swords, pistols, or magic, or a single two-handed weapon. You will be free to swap between all these options as well, even saving different loadouts to make it easier. You aren’t going to be locked out of any weapons or armor based on a class, for example. Instead, you will invest points and gain skills in whatever you want to make your own build as you play. You are going to have a character creator that lets you pick a background, but that will only impact story-related things.

This freedom is also promised to be a major component of the story and various quests you take, but we haven’t gotten any actual examples of just how flexible the game is. If the studio’s prior games are anything to go by, however, then you can expect many different and intelligent ways to complete quests that reward players who are attentive and creative.

Perhaps the biggest differentiator from Skyrim is the fact that Avowed is not a singular open world. While it was initially conceived as such, like The Outer Worlds, Avowed will be hub-based. This choice was made so that the team could emphasize telling tighter stories across multiple locations without bloating the experience. We don’t know how many of these hubs there will be, but expect them to be modestly sized and also packed with details.

You don’t have to take on the danger of the Living Lands alone, though. Companions are available to join you on your adventure, and they will also impact the story. They are not meant to be random NPCs that fight for you and more like dedicated party members that you get to know and grow a bond with. Up to two companions can follow you at a time while the rest stay at your camp ready to be swapped in. We don’t know how many you will meet in total, but it doesn’t seem like any will be missable since some are required for specific story missions. During combat, you can give them general commands, but never specific instructions.

Xbox Games Showcase Deep Dive | Avowed

A deep dive video came out after the 2024 Xbox Games Showcase and featured the developers getting into the finer details of the game that trailers can’t truly show off. The key takeaways from this talk is that Avowed will be playable in either first or third person, you will be able to mix and match your abilities and have the option to respec your character, and it will feature full RPG systems like a skill tree, dialogue choices, and companion interactions.

Gear you find will also come in various qualities that include Common, Fine, Exceptional, and Legendary. If you like a piece of gear but it’s of lower quality, you can also upgrade it.

Digital Trends was able to go hands-on with Avowed in November 2024 to get an updated perspective on how the game would play. Specifically, we wanted to see how the game felt playing entirely from a third-person perspective. We loved the weighty feel of combat and the need to pick our attacks carefully thanks to the stamina meter. Third-person mode isn’t just an afterthought, though. The team had to make specific animations for first- and third-person for every interaction. However, it was the flexibility of the classless system that really won us over.

Not being tied to any specific class let us experiment with any weapon we wanted at any given time and made investing our skill points more satisfying.

Where to find the cartographer in Dawntrail in Avowed
An environment shot of the Dawnshore Eastern Overlands in Avowed.

After the tutorial teaches you the essential tips and tricks for playing Avowed, you will be set free in the Living Lands. Almost right away you will encounter a man named Sanza who has an important side quest for you to locate a missing cartographer. While you might be eager to complete the main story, side quests are important for unlocking new abilities and exploring the world. Unlike most side quests, however, this one only gives you a vague written description of where the cartographer is instead of a marker on your map to travel to. Even though each zone in Avowed isn't massive, there is still a lot of ground to cover when looking for a single person. Here's where you can find the cartographer in Dawntrail.
Where to find the missing cartographer

The side quest only says that the cartographer should be located near some cliffs on the east side of Dawntrail, which is quite a big place to search. The area you're looking for is called Usher's Hand and is directly east of Paradis. If you go out the eastern exit and head north, you will find it no problem.

How long is Avowed?
An environment shot of the Dawnshore Eastern Overlands in Avowed.

When it was first revealed, Avowed drew a lot of comparisons to Skyrim. Both are fantasy RPGs playable in first or third-person and set in open worlds, so it made some sense to compare the two. However, Obsidian later clarified that Avowed was not an open world in the same sense as an Elder Scrolls, and was more hub-based like The Outer Worlds. This left fans wondering just how long of an RPG this would be. Even though the game will be available on Game Pass, it is important to know how long or short of a time investment is before deciding when you want to start it. Here's how long you can expect to spend exploring the Living Lands in Avowed.
How long is Avowed?

Even though the world in Avowed isn't anywhere close to as big as Skyrim, each zone is dense with activities, side quests, and secrets. Your playtime will heavily depend on how much optional content you decide to partake in. In our experience, doing most of the primary side content, our playthrough took around 35 hours. Had we focused only on the main story, we predict it could be finished in between 15 and 20 hours depending on the difficulty level and your individual skill. This is roughly the same as The Outer Worlds.

Should you free Ilora in Avowed?

Avowed is a game that loves to give the player tons of choices. You can read up on all the best tips and tricks for which abilities to get, how to fast travel, and switch to third-person, but no one can tell you how to role-play. The first choice that the game hits you with during the tutorial section is whether or not you should trust a free a prisoner named Ilora. On one hand, she claims to have a boat and will help you reach Paradis. On the other, she clearly has a bone to pick with Aedyrans and could easily betray you. If you're uncertain on how to proceed with this early choice, we'll clue you in on how it all plays out.
Should you free Ilora?

Yes, you should choose to be kind to Ilora and take the time to find the cell key and release her. Not only will she join you as a temporary companion for the rest of the tutorial, but she will keep her word on helping you reach Paradis. There's no risk of betrayal so long as you don't provoke or abandon her.
